Swimming

St Matthew’s Primary is proud to offer swimming to all children with our own outdoor pool. Our pool is heated and has allowed many children over the years to learn to swim and water safety.

We run swimming from Summer 1 - Summer 2 to allow the children as much time as possible to develop the swimming skills they need. Mr Harris and Mrs P-H lead the children in their swimming lessons.

We also run a swimming gala for each year group (R-6) which allows the children to compete in various swimming events tailored to their ability level. Below is our Swimming Gala Roll of Honour for our Winners:

2025

Through our swimming programme, Year 6 pupils have achieved these percentages of swimming skills for the national curriculum criteria:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke].
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

The 2023-2024 Beech class swimming results against the national curriculum objectives were:

30 Children took part in swimming -

  1. 27 out of 29 (93%) - swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  2. 27 out of 29 (93%)  - use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  3. 25 out of 29 (86%)  - perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Total Average for leaving Year 6 -95%

A huge well done to all the Year 6's on achieving such a good overall maker against this criteria.
