Maths
There is a great emphasis on number fluency using the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. This allows the children to learn in various ways and deepen their learning.
An example of this is with the link below:

If you have any questions of how help with any Maths homework or maths in general, please ask your child teacher who will be more than happy to help.
Below are the long term plans that we follow for each class. This will allow you to follow your child's learning throughout their maths journey this year.
In maths there is a high focus on mental maths strategies, and we are using the 1, 10, 5 derive method for learning and recalling the times tables. This is based around the fact the children will know 1x any number and 10x any number. They can then work out the other tables from these facts. It is encouraged so that the children will have deeper knowledge of their tables. In the younger year groups, there is a focus on numbers and understanding how numbers are made, how they fit together and how they can be changed to help with calculations. We are still using TTRockstars to help with timetables. Please ask your child's teacher for the login if you do not have the login.
Much of our maths work is based around problem-solving and reasoning. This requires children to make links in their learning and think more mathematically as they need to pull maths concepts from different areas in order to solve the wider problem.
We also encourage Maths vocabulary using STEM Sentences at St Matthews. This enables our children to knit together their learning using the correct vocabulary while explaining and again deepening their learning with different phrases. Please see below the STEM Sentences that you are more than welcome to use at home, with your children.
