Phonics Screening
Children in Year One completed their Phonics Screening check this week.
All schools have to test their Year One children on their phonic knowledge to check that young children are learning the basics of reading. The children at St Matthew's did really well and tried their absolute best in the activity.
The children are required to read a range of words, including made up or 'nonsense' words that checks they know individual letter sounds and letter blends. The activitiy is designed in a fun and interactive way so the children are unaware that they are being tested.
Today the school had a moderation visit. this is when a moderator from Hampshire visits the school to ensure the tests are being carried out correctly and in accordance with the national guidelines. The moderator was happy with the school's practice. Parents will be informed of the test results shortly.
